Afterwards we headed to Jockey's Ridge, the largest sand dune on the east coast. It ranges between 90-100 feet above sea level, and offered a beautiful view of the coast on Nag's Head.
On Sunday we headed south. We stopped at the Bodie Island lighthouse, then proceeded to Pea Island for some bird watching. We saw all sorts of creatures there, including alligator snapping turtles, herons, geese, red winged blackbirds (one of my favorites), as well as an otter (another favorite).

After visiting Pea Island, we headed on down to Buxton, the location of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. It's approximately 269 steps to the top, which are a lot of steps, especially when you are out of shape! But the reward is worth it. The views are incredible!!
We then headed out to the beach, where David and his Dad (avid fisherman) did some fishing. Of course, nothing was biting at the time, so they weren't very lucky.
Monday we headed down to Ocracoke village. The only way to access this island is via ferry. Ocracoke village was my favorite!
It's a small, quaint village where you can pretty much walk to everything. There are a lot of cute shops and good restaurants on Ocracoke. The beach on Ocracoke was voted the best beach in the US last year, and rightfully so. The water was a beautiful green color (which David tells me is not common--usually it's the murky color we have here). Of course the fish weren't biting there either. On the path back from the beach was a mother duck with her ducklings. The ducklings couldn't have been more than a week old. So precious!!
Anyway, we had an awesome weekend at the Outer Banks! I am looking forward to visiting again!
Of note, when we got home we saw where our deer friends had visited us again. They pretty much finished off everything they didn't eat last weekend. Oh well!

Well Rebakah, David knew you'd like OBX. You experienced it in absolutely perfect weather! First impressions are a good thing, but you will learn that OBX can be quite vicious in winter..only a fisherman can appreciate. We've enjoyed it in all its seasons..even when the cold wind blows. Unfortunately, you were denied the experience of "The Point", due to the Piping Plover closures..actually, we really like Plover..just think there is room for us all. We hope you and Dave get to experience OBX quite often in the years to come. we're glad we were there to see the expressions on your face. Dave's dad & mom >=))*>
